Kanye West Confirmed for South by Southwest Performance

Rumours have been circulating for some time as to the likelihood of a Yeezy performance at this years South by Southwest conference. The initial and unofficial confirmation was received via a Vevo video in which the Kanye track “Runaway” was dropped just before the vid faded to black.

We are now happy to confirm that this is happening!

South by Southwest (at the Vevo Power Station) has long been a good place for aspiring artist to make a name for themselves, providing a great footing for future progression. South by Southwest is a yearly event in which thousands of fans, artists and media minions flock to Austin, Texas to catch a mass mix of new and established talent.

South by Southwest has helped the careers of many artists like Big K.R.I.T, Pill and Freddie Gibbs (to name a few) but every now and again, some of the big hitters join the madness! This is where Kanye comes in… His last appearance at the show was back in 2009 at the Fader Fort Venue, where he was joined by the likes of Mr. Hudson, Consequence and Big Sean and he has decided to take a break from the studio to hit up the old stomping ground.

He will be performing at midnight on the 19th of March (2011). There has been no confirmation on special guest performances as of yet but here’s hoping for some awesome on stage collaborations. (Bring on Nicki Minaj!)

The “Monster” music video featuring Jay Z, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross & Bon Iver was leaked online a couple of months back as an unfinished version. It was assumed that the video would be released on TV once final tweaks had been made as an official cut but after a petition from Change.org was signed by MTV it appeared that this was highly unlikely.

A spokesperson for MTV released the following statement: “MTV has not banned Kaye West’s ‘Monster’ video. We have been in constant communication with the label regarding this matter. However, we are still awaiting the edits we requested in order for the video to be suitable for broadcast.”

The petition was raised because of the negative depiction of women in the video. Melinda Tankard Reist, a campaign organiser involved in the petition gave her views on the video:
“The mainstreaming of videos like this increases desensitized and callous attitudes toward violence against women,”

she then went on to say;

“Young people are seeing images and absorbing harmful messages which glamorise misogyny and brutalise women. Women are reduced to sex-doll like playthings. So great is the level of desensitization that the barbaric treatment of women and girls is seen as normal and to be expected. We decided to run this campaign because we wanted to challenge the status quo.”

Check out the leak if you get a chance, (it can still be found on YouTube) and let us know your thoughts on this… Has the video gone too far or do you think the negative impact is being blown out of proportion?
