The “Monster” music video featuring Jay Z, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross & Bon Iver was leaked online a couple of months back as an unfinished version. It was assumed that the video would be released on TV once final tweaks had been made as an official cut but after a petition from Change.org was signed by MTV it appeared that this was highly unlikely.

A spokesperson for MTV released the following statement: “MTV has not banned Kaye West’s ‘Monster’ video. We have been in constant communication with the label regarding this matter. However, we are still awaiting the edits we requested in order for the video to be suitable for broadcast.”

The petition was raised because of the negative depiction of women in the video. Melinda Tankard Reist, a campaign organiser involved in the petition gave her views on the video:
“The mainstreaming of videos like this increases desensitized and callous attitudes toward violence against women,”

she then went on to say;

“Young people are seeing images and absorbing harmful messages which glamorise misogyny and brutalise women. Women are reduced to sex-doll like playthings. So great is the level of desensitization that the barbaric treatment of women and girls is seen as normal and to be expected. We decided to run this campaign because we wanted to challenge the status quo.”

Check out the leak if you get a chance, (it can still be found on YouTube) and let us know your thoughts on this… Has the video gone too far or do you think the negative impact is being blown out of proportion?

Snoop Dogg’s youth football team is aimed at combatting inner-city violence and has been a great success so far. The league has now expanded to include eight teams in the Chicago area.

Snoop has appointed Tonja Styles as president for the Chicago division and former Super Bowl champion Otis Wilson had been chosen as VP for the league.

Styles was quoted during an interview saying:

“When the Derrion Albert tragedy shocked the world and embarrassed this city, the Hip Hop artists were the first to respond, from Nas to Bow Wow to Swizz Beatz; because they come from the same conditions and challenges these kids are facing,” Styles continued. “But it was Snoop who had a “real” program that offers a “real” alternative to the streets. We can’t continue to say, ‘Stop the Violence,’ and not offer something in its place.”

The league is set to debut four of the new teams in the next few months to showcase the new Chicago talent.

Snoop’s football league is a demonstration that there is more to Hip Hop than just drugs and violence and provides an outlet for some of the most over looked and underrated talent to shine.

Respect to Snoop, the teams and everyone involved and good luck!
