
Yesterday May 22nd saw Aubrey Berry equitted of murder for the shooting of 21 year old rapper Dolla.
Dolla an artist signed to Akon’s Konvict Music label was gunned down at the Beverly Centre last May, in an event which ion recent times has seen prosecutors seek the death penalty for his killer.
Aubrey Berry 24 had a permit to carry a gun in certain states and testified in his own defense, claiming that he often traveled to Los Angeles armed and claimed he was unaware that his permit was invalid in California.
Berry further testified that he had met Dolla a week before the shooting and had become embroiled in an altercation with the rapper in a club in Atlanta. He then stated that he had researched the rapper and his violent lyrics as well as Dolla and other gang members allegedly bragging about the assault of another man.
Berry then claimed that when the pair met by chance at the Beverly Centre Dolla had proceeded to make threats to kill him, in an event that shortly after saw Dolla struck three times in the back trying to escape the gunfire from Berry.
The mother of the slain rapper had to be removed from the courtroom after the verdict due to her reaction to the outcome.
Superior Court Judge Michael E. Pastor speaking to the lawyers in court stated “Obviously, what happened on May 18, 2009, was a horrible tragedy for everyone, The jurors have spoken.”
Deputy District attorney Bobby Grace feared that the Jurors may have been swayed by the lyrics of deceased rapper Dolla, and stated to the Los Angeles Times outside the court “You’d hate to think that was the tipping point,”
